Paire de fibules en or du Ier s. av. J.-C. : autour d’une découverte de l’oppidum de Corent (Puy-de-Dôme)

Abstract. During the excavations undergoing on the oppidum of puy de Corent (Puy-de-Dôme), a couple of solid gold brooches linked by a chain was recovered on the floor of a dwelling dated to the middle 1st century B. C. A reassessment of the publications devoted to Late Iron Age gold and silver brooches shows the extreme scarcity and peculiar status of this kind of ornaments in the north of the Alps area. The examples from Corent belong to a type of Italic brooches produced in Northern Cisalpine Gaul and spread in Transalpine between the years 70 and 30 B. C. Their material and technology of the chain confirm this Mediterranean filiation, also underlined by literary sources. Noticed as insigna in Rome, worn by military tribuni or offered as diplomatic presents, these gold trims could have reached Gaul by different ways: through privileged contacts, diplomatic or commercial, by tribal leaders, among the Arverni or insular people, with the Roman Republic or through legionary officers or auxiliaries recruited for conquest operations.
